What is a Natural Dentist?

The Merriam-Webster definition states:

1nat·u·ral adjective ˈna-chə-rəl, ˈnach-rəl

: existing in nature and not made or caused by people: coming from nature

: not having any extra substances or chemicals added : not containing anything artificial

: usual or expected

Let’s go deeper with the highlighted definition above: “not having any extra substances or chemicals added”.

In our previous post about amalgam fillings, what we strongly feel negatively against are full of just that – chemicals and extra substances.  The scariest substance is mercury! You know the kind that use to be in the old thermometers we used as a child to check our temperature?  Remember that silver liquid incased in glass?  The only thing separating us from IT was a steady hand and oh, not to bite down on it?  To think we knew exactly that the fumes of this substance is poisonous yet we put that thing in our mouths.  Yikes!

As time moved on and public awareness grew, we have since banned the production and sell of at home mercury thermometers in 2012.  Well, what about the silver stuff in our mouth?

“There are conflicting studies between Sweden and the United States. In Sweden, they have conducted a number of studies where people, with pre-existing neurological and health issues (Chronic Fatigue-type symptoms), had amalgams removed; 78% reported improvement in their health status. In the United States, official studies hired by the FDA and National Institutes of Health (NIH) stated that “the current data is insufficient to support an association between mercury release from amalgams and the various complaints that have been attributed to this restorative material.” Quoted from Jonathan B. Levin DMD

So what should you consider when choosing your Holistic/Natural dental provider:

1.   Are they a fluoride free establishment?

2.   Do they use safe amalgam removal protocol?

a.   If so, have them describe that to you.

3.   How often does the natural dentist use x-rays?

a.   Ask them when it’s needed and why.

4.   What is their procedure with fillings?

a.   What do they use to fill a tooth?

5.   Do they know of homeopathic remedies in conjunction with your mouth ailments?

If your above questions are answered with complete satisfaction you’ve found yourself a keeper, but what are the right answers?  Our subsequent posts will touch on each question further.
